Tintoretto is Venice

Itinerari and tours
September 3rd, 2018 - Venice

"Tintoretto is Venice, and even if Venice, forever the most serene courtesan, has loved and wooed other painters after him, she has never forgotten nor neglected him […]" according to the words ofart scholars Renzo and Giovanni Villa.

Venice is getting ready to usher in the 500th anniversary of Tintoretto’s birth honouring him with two major exhibitions: "The young Tintoretto" at the Accademia Galleries, from September 7, 2018 to January 6, 2019, and "Tintoretto 1519-1594" at Palazzo Ducale from September 7, 2018 to January 6, 2019.

These celebrations are a unique opportunity to refresh our appreciation of the paintings of the great artist who left a wealth of canvases in the city where he was born and lived. With our tours we will explore examples of his art encompassing the whole city, and retrace the milestones of his life and artistic career with curiosity and a playful spirit.

Our first stop will be his work at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, one of the most fascinating pictorial undertakings of all time and identified by some as the "Sistine in the Lagoon", with its wonderful cycle of canvases depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament. “Walking through the rooms of the Scuola is like walking through the pages of a book (or better still, the book of books, the Bible)” [1], feasting on the pages with our eyes.

Another gem, located in one of the most genuine, down-to-earth districts of the city, is the Church of the Madonna Dell'Orto, home to 10 canvases by the artist and called for this reason – and the fact that he is buried here - "Tintoretto’s church."

More off the beaten track is the Church of San Cassiano where the painter was baptized, and now housing one of the artist's most famous works, "The Crucifixion", a masterpiece of extraordinary beauty.

And there's much, much more! Tintoretto’s heritage is part of Venice, and can be discovered in the smaller churches, the hidden corners, the places that were familiar to him and the stories of his life that our experts will be able to tell you to make his world and work come alive before your eyes.
